Isiolo International Airport is set for opening. Operations for charter flights are expected to start as from October and then scheduled flights starting from November 2016.

The exact date for the commencement has not been announced yet. That notwithstanding, Isiolo County Commissioner, George Natembeya announced that a committee has been constituted to handle any emergencies that may arise. The team is composed of representatives from Isiolo County government, Kenya Airports Authority, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and County security team. 

The official opening of the airport by the president will take place on January, 2017. Efforts to secure the airport have been increased in the recent months.

Primary School Inside the Airport

The government has allocated Ksh. 75 million for the relocation of KK Nkengechia Primary School which is located inside the airport. There are approximately 300 pupils learning at the school.

The airport is expected to open up the northern Kenya region to numerous economic opportunities.This is one of Vision 2030 flagship projects in Kenya.

The County Commissioner however expressed his fear over the existence of hills around the airport because they have “security implications.”
