India recorded more than 90,000 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours taking its total cases above that of Brazil.
According to data collected and compiled by the Johns Hopkins University, 4,204,613 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in India as of Monday at 1100HRS EAT.
The virus has also claimed a total of 71,642 lives in India.
The United States, with more than 6.2 million cases, remains the worst-affected country.
The rise in Covid-19 cases comes as the government of India is in the process of relaxing restrictions that left millions of people jobless.
Over 60% of the Covid-19 cases in India are from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.
In the past one week, nearly 1000 deaths have been reported everyday across the country.
India introduced a strict lock-down in March to combat the spread of the deadly virus.
By June, cases were spiking but the government started a phased reopening of the economy.
India’s economy had shrunk by 23.9% in the three months.
