Highlights of Narok County CIDP 2018-2022

Narok County is named after Enkale Narok, a river which flows across the town. Narok County is famous for the Great Wilderbeast Migration which is actually one of the “seven Wonder of the World.”

Farmers in Narok County grow Maize, Irish potatoes, barley and horticultural crops. Gold is mined at Kilimapesa in Lolgorian.

Narok County borders Kisii, Tanzania, Nyamira, Bomet, Nakuru and Kajiado Counties. Narok County has its headquarters in Narok Town.

Mara and Ewaso Nyiro are the major rivers that traverse Narok County. Mara is key considering that it passes through Maasai Game Reserve and ends by draining into Lake Victoria.

An excess of 300,000 tourists visit Maasai Mara Game Reserve every year. The peak season coincides with the Great Wildebeest Migration that happens between July and September every year.

Administrative Units

Narok County is dived into six sub-counties: Narok East, Narok West, Transmara West, Transmara East, Narok North and Narok South.

Narok West is the largest sub-county with an area of 5,452.7 square kilometers while Transmara East is the smallest with 320.5 square kilometers.

There are 6 constituencies in Narok County: These are: Narok East, Emurua Dikirr, Kilgoris, Narok West, Narok North and Narok South.

Urban Centers

There are two main urban centers in Narok County. That is: Narok town and Kiligoris town.

The two towns has a total population of 24,786 people and this is projected to grow to 73,103 people in 2022.

Energy

It is estimated that only 1% of the residents in Narok use Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), 2% use paraffin; 80% use firewood and 17% use charcoal.

Conservancies

There are a number of conservancies such as Siana, Pardamat, Mara Naboisho and Mara North.

Implementation of Previous CIDP

Narok County raised Ksh. 26.4 billion against a target of Ksh. 37.3 billion.

During the period FY 2013/2014 to 2016/2017, Narok County collected a total of Ksh. 6.4 billion from own sources of revenue. The majority of own sources of revenue Ksh. 5.8 billion was from Maasai Mara Game Reserve.
