The German Bundesliga can resume this month, Chancellor Angela Merkel has approved.

Football activities in Germany were suspended since mid-March due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

It will become the first European league to resume, with the restart date set to be confirmed the German Football League (DFL).

All the remaining games will be played without spectators.

DFL chief executive Christian Seifert said:’’ Today’s decision is good news for the Bundesliga and the Bundesliga 2.

‘’It is associated with a great responsibility to the clubs and their employees to implement the medical and organizational requirements in a disciplined manner.

‘’Games without spectators are not an ideal solution to anyone. In a crisis threatening the very existence of some clubs, however, it is the only way to keep the leagues in their current form.’’

The DFL recently announced 10 positive results from 1724 coronavirus tests of the 36 clubs in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.

The affected persons have been isolated and a second round of testing will be carried out before the league resumes.

The DFL had warned that the most clubs would be in a difficult financial situation if the league did not resume by June.

With 9 rounds of games remaining, Bayern Munich sit on top of the Bundesliga table, four points ahead of second-placed Dortmund.

Over 150,000 Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Germany, with the virus claiming about 6,300 lives.
