European Union Recalls Roeland van de Geeron Tanzania Ambassador

EU has recalled its ambassador to Tanzania, Roeland van de Geeron, on grounds of deterioration of “human rights and rule of law.” This was after Tanzania’s crackdown on gays, lesbians and transgender Tanzanians.

In Zanzibar, people suspected to be gay were arrested and others had to flee the country. Amnesty International reported that these people were arrested over the weekend at Pongwe beach island in Zanzibar.

Just like sex workers gays and lesbians are beaten, humiliated as well as harassed by the police and the ordinary citizens.

Paul Makonda, Dar es Salaam’s regional governor urged citizens to report at people suspected to be members of the LGBT community.

Gays, lesbians and Bi-sexual people in Tanzania face a 30-year sentence in Tanzania. These laws were inherited from the colonial-era Tanzania.
