In Kenya coronavirus has taught us a number of lessons: 

  • Our elected leaders should focus of developing the capacity of our healthcare system considering that during crisis such as pandemics they have to be served locally; 
  • During peace, we should prepare for war. What I mean is that when there is no pandemics our governments should invest on local production of essential healthcare commodities such as ventilators, face masks, hand sanitizers etc and one way of achieving that is through providing incentives for local industries; 
  • Our governments should have a stockpile of eye shields, N95 masks, feeding tubes, dialysis machines and urine catheters among others ready to respond to future pandemics; 
  • Our governments should come up with efficient policies for scaling up local production capacity for medical equipment which require a lot of time to produce;
