The World Health Organisation has warned that coronavirus ‘’may never go away’’.

Dr Mike Ryan, WHO emergencies director, warned against trying to predict when the virus would disappear at a press briefing on Wednesday.

He added that massive efforts would be required to contain the virus even if a vaccine is found.

As at now, more than 4.3 Million coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the world, with the virus claiming more than 300,000 lives.

“It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,” Dr Ryan told the virtual press conference from Geneva.

“HIV has not gone away – but we have come to terms with the virus.”

Dr Ryan added he doesn’t believe “anyone can predict when this disease will disappear”.

At the moment, there are more than 100 vaccines being developed. However, Dr Ryan noted that there are other diseases, such as measles that haven’t been eliminated despite having vaccines for them.
