Liberia is the latest country in Africa to cancel their football season following the global coronavirus pandemic.

The 2019/2020 Liberia Premier League has been declared null and void by the Liberia Football Federation following an emergency executive meeting.

Mustapha Raji, President of the Liberia Football Federation told BBC Sport Africa: ‘’There is no champion, no promotion and no relegation. We start a new league and determine a new champion for the 2020/2021 season.’’

‘’We are currently under a lockdown that was declared by the president. Looking at the prediction from our health authority that they are looking at a nine-month period and coupled with comments by the FIFA medical experts, most of the clubs felt there was a need to nullify the league,’’ Said Raji

Raji reiterated that even if the government relaxed the lockdown measures, the Covid – 19 pandemic had already taken a toll on the financial capabilities of the league sponsors.

‘’The clubs highlighted the challenges faced in terms of additional revenues from sponsors. Individuals sponsoring the league were no longer in the position to do so due to the pandemic. ‘’

The top four teams at the time when the league was suspended will play a tournament and the winner will play at the CAF Champions League.

Mauritius was the first African country to end their season. Burkina Faso, Kenya, Angola, Guniea and Ethiopia have also ended their campaigns.

More countries will soon announce their decisions as CAF has issued a May 5th deadline to member associations to decide how they intend to end their 2019/2020 campaigns.
