Southern France: Climate activists filled golf holes with cement in protest against exemption of golf greens from water bans as the country experiences serious drought.

The activists aimed at the city of Toulouse naming golf the “leisure industry of the most privileged.”

Hundred French villages have no access to drinking water when golf greens are exempted- which means they are receiving water.

“A golf course without a green is like an ice-rink without ice,” Gérard Rougier of the French Golf Federation told the France Info news website.

At least 15,000 people are employed and working at golf courses across France. The ongoing activism is targeting golf courses in the towns of Blagnac and Vieille-Toulouse.

The Climate activists filled golf hole saying that  “economic madness takes precedence over ecological reason.

Residents are not allowed to wash their cars or water their gardens in the worst-hit municipalities. However, golf-courses are allowed to continue irrigating their expansive green fields.

The water ban is being implemented nation-wide in France. However, the implementation is at the discretion of the regional officials.

However, one region, Ille-et-Villaine located in Western France has banned the watering of golf-courses.

The Mayor of Grenoble City said that “We continue to protect the rich and powerful.” He was criticizing the exemption of golf courses from the water ban hence climate activists filled golf holes in protest.

In the rest of the country, golf courses are expected to water their fields at night with no more than 30% of the usual volume of water.

Sections of the Loire river have dried up. The state has declared a crisis over two-thirds of France with rainfall decreasing by 85 percent.
