For the past couple of weeks, it has not been business as usual in Ethiopia. The country’s Oromia Region experience deadly violence which lead to deaths and injuries of hundreds of Ethiopians. 

This inter-ethnic tensions was so unfortunate and should never have happened. Following the ethnic tensions, the federal government of Ethiopia switched off the internet for two weeks and only reopened it partially following international and domestic outcry.  

Many pundits point to the killing of a popular Promo musician and activist as the root cause of the reported violence. 

Oromo is the largest ethnic community in Ethiopia followed closely by the Amhara ethnic group. The two communities make up 60% of the country’s population. 

There are other communities who are the minorities such as the Somali who occupy the South Eastern part of Ethiopia.
