Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for Covid-19.

Mr Bolsonaro was tested on Monday after he developed symptoms, including fever. It was his fourth Covid-19 test.

All the previous tests came back negative.

Brazil is the second hardest hit country in the world, after United States.

According to data collected and compiled by the John Hopkins University, 1.6Million cases of the deadly virus have been confirmed in Brazil as of Tuesday at 0800 EAT.

In a TV interview on Tuesday, president Bolsonaro said he started experiencing the symptoms on Sunday. He said he had a high temperature, a cough and he felt unwell.

The situation worsened on Monday and he had to be tested.

Bolsonaro is in a higher risk because of his age, 65.

All those who came into contact with president Bolsonaro recently are being traced.

In April, Mr Bolsonaro said even if he would be infected with the virus, he would not worry because it would feel like a little flu.

At that time, 40,000 cases had been confirmed and less than 3,000 patients had succumbed to the virus.

However, Brazil has seen a surge in infections and the virus had claimed 66,741 lives as of Tuesday.

Mr Bolsonaro has also been widely criticised on his response to the pandemic. He did not introduce a national lockdown to curb the spread of the virus.

Mr Bolsonaro has clashed with state governors and mayors who have locked down major cities as a way of minimising the spread of the deadly virus.

President Bolsonaro argues that the economic impact of the virus will be much bigger that the virus itself.

Two health ministers, both doctors are said to have resigned after disagreeing with the president.
