FC Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Frenkie de Jong suffered a calf injury.

The 23-year-old missed Friday’s La Liga game against Sevilla, where Barca were held to a goalless draw.

It was confirmed a day earlier that the Netherlands international had been ruled out through injury, though the club did not reveal the details.

Following examination, the club were able to determine that the former Ajax star is suffering with a problem in his soleus muscle in the right calf.

The club has however not given the timescale for his recovery.

The clubs statement read:’’ The clinical follow-up on Frenkie De Jong has uncovered an injury in the soleus of his right leg. The evolution of the injury will condition the player’s availability.’’

De Jong is in his first season at Camp Nou and has played a total of 38 games this season in all competitions.

Barcelona will host Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday in the Spanish La Liga.

Friday’s draw at Seville leaves Barcelona three points ahead of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.
