Atletico Madrid etched Diego Simeone’s name into their record books after the team beat Levante 1-0 on Tuesday.
The win was vital in the chase for Champions League qualification. The victory represented a landmark for Simeone in La Liga.
The 1-0 win, secured thanks to an early own goal, was Simeone’s 194th in the La Liga as Atletico boss, equaling Luis Aragones’ record.
Atletico Madrid have won their last three La Liga games and Simeone matched Aragones record after 319 games.
Aragones, who is Atletico’s record goalscorer, had four stints in charge of the club, winning La Liga in 1976-77, but required 407 games to tally 194 league wins.
Simeone won the La Liga as Atletico head coach in 2013-14 season.
Simeone will have the opportunity to claim the top spot outright when his side play Deportivo Alaves on Saturday.
