Prince Henrik of Denmark, husband of Queen Margrethe II died aged 83 years. He struggled to win the Danish people for a half-century and was only successful in later years.

He died on 13 February night, his wife and children were besides his bed as he died. He was hospitalized due to an infection and a tumor in the lungs in January. He was sent home to Fredensborg Castle on Tuesday before dying.

The prince was diagnosed with dementia late 2017. He will be remembered as  a lover of poetry, good wine, and cooking. The Danish people were only irritated by his frequent outbursts of anger and extravagant lifestyle, the country values discretion and humility.

In 2016, he retired from public service. He announced that he will be known as Prince Henrik and not Prince Consort.

In 2017, he requested not to be buried next to his wife because he was never made her equal, a king. The palace said that the queen accepted his request, though the decision broke the traditions of burying the spouses together.

Prince Henrik of Denmark met Margrethe when he was a diplomat, she was the crown princess then, while he was in London.  He changed his name to Henrik after marrying Margrethe, converted to Protestantism from Catholicism. He also renounced his French citizenship to become a Dane. The couple had two sons, Frederik and Joakim.

He never liked Denmark, because he was teased for his accent and did not understand why he was required to stay in his wife’s shadow. He once told the media that people thought he was a looser but he wanted to prove them wrong. In 1997, he stood in for his wife for the first time in Greenland.

Prince Henrik of Denmark returned home from the winter Olympics in South Korea to be with his father the previous week.

After his death, the household announced a month of mourning, the royals will wear black clothing and they will not participate in any social event. The military staff will also wear arm bands that are black.

The family has no political authority in Denmark, it is the oldest kingdom and it prides on stability.
