Ownership of Lake Malawi Dispute Intensifies

There is an ongoing dispute between Tanzania and Malawi over ownership of Lake Malawi or Lake Nyasa. It is a replay of the dispute on who between Kenya and Uganda owns Migingo Island.

Malawi believes that the entire lake belongs to her. She is making this claim based on Anglo-German Treaty of 1890. This is a treaty that settled disputes between Great Britain and Germany though in short term.

In counter-argument, the Tanzanian government is disputing that and instead claiming half of Lake Malawi. This argument is based on Customary International Law.

This dispute on Lake Malawi started back in 1960 and has been running since then. The two feuding parties were expected to hold a meeting in Johannesburg to discuss this conflict but it was cancelled by the Tanzanian side because Jacob Zuma was visiting Tanzania.
