Attempted Gabon coup de tat

Early today a group of soldiers attempted Gabon coup de tat on the government of Ali Bongo. The president’s family has clinged on power for over half a century now.

The coup plotters have claimed that President Ali Bongo is not mentally or physically able to rule the country.

When the residents of Libreville woke up today, they found tanks patrolling the streets and gun shots were heard all over.

Ali Bongo, the current President has been in Morocco since November 2018 seeking specialized treatment after suffering stroke. Initially, he was admitted in hospital in Saudi Arabia.

The seizure of power my the military was announced by Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang on national radio station.

“Calm has returned, the situation is under control,” said Guy-Bertrand Mapangou who is the government spokesman.
